Kruger National Park, South Africa: Elephant Collaring, Rhino Horn Trimming, Wildebeest & Antelope Relocation

[August 2024] Hands down, this was one of, if not, the most incredible and eye-opening experiences of my life. From relocating wildebeests to protect them from poaching to witnessing the sheer size and strength of rhinos up close, every moment reinforced how critical conservation efforts are.

Spending time with these magnificent creatures and learning about the vital work being done to protect them was truly humbling. Idk why, but I never truly realized just how massive rhinos are until I was in person—their skin is genuinely as thick as concrete, yet they are being targeted and killed at alarming rates. Sadly though, rhinos are ruthlessly poached for their horns, which are literally just the same as our nails or hair. Witnessing the dedication of those fighting to ensure these gentle giants thrive despite these threats has inspired me in ways I can’t even begin to express.

Chasing down and transporting wildebeests was something I never anticipated doing, yet it was one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had! The process was wild—planes and helicopters located the target animals and separated them from the herd, the vet in the helicopter darted them, and then, through walkie-talkies, we’d get directions to drive through the dirt roads of the reserve to find them. Once we reached them, we carried them on a stretcher back to the truck and transported them to HQ for vaccines and vitamins before sending them off to be relocated. It’s another thing I wish we didn’t have to do because of people infringing on these animals’ livelihoods, but I’m grateful that there are people making these efforts year-round. And honestly, I’m just super grateful I was able to join them on this adventure. Shoutout to Wildscapes, Loop Abroad, and Dr. Chloe Buiting for allowing me to join and take part in such a critical and life-changing conservation mission.
